Your Tree May Be in Trouble If . . .

Leaves are Small, Sparse, or Scorched

Often attributed to insects or disease, the sparse foliage on the Norway maple tree at left is caused by a girdling root that's strangling the tree! These symptoms, tree at left in the photo at right, are common when a tree’s ability to transport water, nutrients and carbohydrates (sugars and starches)  between its leaves and roots are restricted.

This often happens when tree trunks are injured by lawn mowers, string trimmers or “girdling” roots.

This tree was planted nine inches too deep and gradually suffocated to death!Root damage caused by nearby construction projects also limits the movement of water and nutrients from roots to leaves.

And, these symptoms are common on young trees if they’ve been planted too deep, at left, or watered too frequently.
