Your Tree May Be in Trouble If . . .

Nearby Trees Have Been Removed

In forests, trees protect each other from the brunt of strong winds. In forests, trees shield each other from strong winds, at right.

However, when roads, driveways and homes are built on wooded sites, any trees that remain become susceptible to blow down because their root systems are often severely damaged during the construction process, below left.

Those trees remaining after construction are prone to future storm damage. Also, because their branches are often clustered near the top of the tree, they present a large “sail” that captures strong winds previously blocked by the trees that were removed. This often results in very tall trees dramatically snapping in half like toothpicks during severe storms!
